Over the past few months, there were passing stories of some form of monster in the small lake in Sanctuary. The tales ranged from a form of reptilian-like creature, to a form of Erubi that was both amphibious and stealthy in the water. Having heard a few more tales from a rather drunken traveler one evening, I decided to return to Sanctuary and try to find out if this was indeed a new menace to the unwary or something else.
Upon arriving in Sanctuary, there was an infestation of sorts, but not anywhere near the dreaded descriptions I had heard previously. Apparently, I had arrived during a tournament of some sorts between various townsfolk and a large pack of smaller, scaled creatures. They were named Skitters, and I was also told that this was their annual game against Sanctuary for the prize…”A Shiny”, by another observer in the crowd. The game was rather fast-paced, and very loud, mainly due to the Skitters cheering on their own. For a brief time, it looked the worst for Sanctuary’s team, but they came back and ended up winning. The prize was granted, and the Skitters actually left quite peacefully.
I took the time afterwards to head down to the nearby shore of the lake, to try and find any trace of what was previously described to me. Aside from avoiding a clutch of nesting beach chickens, there were a few tracks from much smaller creatures, with impressions in a mudbank from a relatively large-sized turtle being the only present sign of anything remotely hostile. There was, however, no trace of any monster in the lake that would fit even the tamest of descriptions.
So unless this dreaded monster of Sanctuary’s lake is indeed as stealthy as some of the drunken rumors state, as of this time, there seems to be no new lake monster threatening the nearby population or other animals that inhabit the shores.
Rumors are truly about as good as the mouth that speak them.
Oh well, at least the “Skitterball” was entertaining.
Until next time, may your arrows fly and strike true.
